Muizz Drabu is a bilingual, dual qualified arbitration lawyer whose practice is uniquely rooted in India related disputes and a growing practice focused on Africa-related disputes. He regularly advises corporates and entities on complex, cross border matters, drawing on his substantial experience in India. This grounding enables him to navigate multi jurisdictional issues, enforcement risks and strategic considerations that frequently arise in international disputes, particularly in India- and Africa-focused matters

Expertise

Muizz has acted in arbitrations seated in London, India, Singapore, and Africa under the rules of the LCIA, ICC, SIAC and MCIA. He advises on arbitration-related applications before the English High Court and is currently serving as a tribunal secretary on a multi-million dollar arbitration. He has experience across sectors, including energy, aviation, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and media.

Career

Muizz has practised in India for four years and previously worked with a leading law firm in India as a member of the disputes team. He has also briefly clerked with a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India. Muizz graduated from the University of Cambridge LLM programme, where he studied as a J.N. Tata Scholar specialising in commercial law, earning first-class honours.

Experience

  • Successfully represented a British Virgin Islands company under receivership in ICC arbitration proceedings arising from a loan and security agreement defending a claim for recovery of amount.
  • Successfully represented a US company in proceedings against an Indian entity before the Commercial Court (England & Wales) for challenging an arbitral award.
  • Representing a West African energy company in LCIA arbitration proceedings against a Chinese state-owned entity arising from sale of a transportation vessel claiming for damages.
  • Representing a Southeast African company in ICC arbitration proceedings against a government entity in a shareholder dispute seeking recovery of the investment and claiming for damages.
  • Representing a Middle Eastern state entity in LCIA arbitration proceedings against an Indian company arising from an EPC contract for a gas turbine power plant claiming for damages.
  • Representing a Dutch company in ICC arbitration proceedings against an Indian counterparty, involving claims for recovery of sums due and counterclaims for breach of contract.
  • Acting as Tribunal Secretary in a multi‑million‑dollar arbitration arising out of cloud storage and technology services contracts.
  • Advising the Republic of Poland in its sections 67 and 68 challenges against a £252m BIT UNCITRAL award in its dispute with GreenX Metals (formerly Prairie Mining).
