Laing
Gemma is a trainee solicitor in the Competition Litigation department. Before starting her training contract, she worked for two years as a paralegal in the Aviation team. During her training contract she has gained experience in the Aviation, Personal Injury and Commercial Litigation practices.
Expertise
Gemma has assisted on a wide range of complex, high‑value aviation injury disputes, including claims arising from injuries on commercial airlines and private aircraft, as well as paragliding and skydiving accidents. Much of her experience involves matters with an international element.
She has experience drafting schedules of loss and witness statements, instructing medico‑legal experts, preparing legal correspondence, issuing claims and conducting legal research. Gemma has also attended mediations, court hearings and client meetings alongside instructed solicitors and counsel.
In relation to commercial disputes, Gemma has assisted on matters involving civil fraud, contractual interpretation and securities, and has experience preparing cases for trial in the Commercial Court.
Career
Gemma studied Social Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She subsequently completed the Graduate Diploma in Law at BPP University in London, followed by the Legal Practice Course, for which she was awarded a Distinction.
Prior to joining Stewarts, Gemma worked as a paralegal at a criminal law firm in London.
She volunteers with the Salvation Army, interviewing potential victims of human trafficking for referral into the National Referral Mechanism.
Personal
Gemma enjoys playing netball and tennis, and practices yoga. She attends a book club, likes to cook for family and friends, and enjoys travelling abroad.
Experience
- Assisting on a fatal claim on behalf of a British family arising from the death of a husband and father on a commercial airline flight while working overseas.
- Assisting in securing settlement for a drama student who sustained a traumatic brain injury following a road traffic collision.
- Assisting on a serious personal injury claim arising from a workplace accident which resulted in a below the knee amputation.
- Providing support throughout the year long trial of a complex, multi jurisdictional fraud claim.
